We all know the importance of personal skin care. Opinions on how to proceed (in terms of personal skin care) vary from person to person. Some people believe that going to the beauty salon every other day is personal skin care. Others believe that personal skin care simply means applying a cream or lotion to the skin from time to time. Then there are those who believe that skin care is a once a month or once a year event. Others practice "personal skin care" all the time. However, personal skin care is not very complicated and not very expensive (considering its usefulness). Personal skin care is a routine or procedure tailored to the needs of the skin.
Even before starting a skin care routine, you need to determine your skin type (oily, dry, sensitive, normal, etc.) and choose the right skin care products (you may need to try some products). Here is a routine that should work for most people with normal skin.
The first part of a personal skin care routine is "cleansing". The three main ingredients in cleansers are oil, water, and surfactants (moisturizers). The oil and surfactants absorb dirt and oil from the skin, and the water removes it, leaving the skin clean. You may have to try several cleansers before you find the one that works best for you. However, always use soap-free cleansers. Also, warm water should be used for cleansing (hot and cold water will damage the skin). Make sure that you don't over clean and damage your skin as a result.
The second part of your personal skin care routine is exfoliation. The skin goes through a natural maintenance process whereby it removes dead cells and replaces them with new cells. Exfoliation is just one way to help your skin in this process. Dead skin cells cannot react to personal skin care products, but rather consume these products, preventing them from reaching the new skin cells. Removing dead skin cells is therefore important to increase the effectiveness of all skin care products. Exfoliation usually takes place immediately after cleansing. As with any personal skin care product, it is important to know how much exfoliation is required. Exfoliate oily/normal skin 4-5 times a week and dry/sensitive skin 1-2 times a week. In hot and humid weather, exfoliate a few more times.
The next part of your skin care routine is with moisturizers. This is one of the most important aspects of personal skin care. Even people with oily skin need a moisturizer. Moisturizers not only lock moisture into the skin cells, but also draw moisture out (from the air) when needed. However, overuse of moisturizer can clog pores and ultimately damage the skin. Find out how much moisturizer your skin needs within a week of using it. It's also a good idea to apply moisturizer while your skin is still damp.
The last part of your personal skin care routine is sunscreen. Many moisturizers (day cream/moisturizers) contain UV protection, so you benefit twice as much. Such moisturizers are recommended for use on all days (whether sunny or cloudy).
Again, experiment with different skin care products and also the amount of moisturizer you use. The one that gives you the best results will be the best customized skin care recipe for you. However, if you have skin problems, it is best to consult a dermatologist before using any personal skin care products.
